Author’s abstract: In some of the vihuela books published in Spain between 1536 and 1576 there is a musical genre called “sonnet”, related to the poetic form. In Silva de sirenas (1547), however the collection presents a novelty: instrumental sonetos based on simple melodies of different origins. This article studies this collection of melodies in order to deepen understanding of the compositional process of these sonnets.
This essay has several deficiencies. The first comes from not recognising that “soneto”, derived from “son” or is not necessarily an explicit reference to the “melody” or uppermost voice of the piece, but a designation more equivalent to “piece” that Valderrábano seems to have given to music of whose origins or genre he was not entirely sure of.
