Abstract: We have had hints that pifanos and flautas de Alemania were used quite frequently in heraldic and dance music during the Renaissance in Europe, although few scholarly studies have been dedicated to the presence of members of the flute family in Castile, especially in the period prior to the arrival of the first Habsburg monarchs. The present article seeks to fill the gap in research by presenting the results of a study, based on literary, archival and iconographic sources, of the identity and professional activity of Castilian and Flemish minstrels in charge of members of the flute family who gathered at the Castilian Court. Some answers are suggested to questions about the typology and terminology of instruments, performers, and possible contexts in which members of the flute family were employed in Castile before the reign of the Catholic Monarchs.

Resumen: Aunque sabemos por fuentes diversas que el uso de “pífanos” y “flautas de Alemania” fue bastante frecuente en la música heráldica y de danza durante el Renacimiento en Europa, muy pocos estudios hablan de la presencia y tipología de las flautas en Castilla, más aún cuando se trata del período anterior a la llegada de los primeros Austrias. El presente artículo pretende llenar dicho vacío exponiendo los resultados de un estudio basado en fuentes literarias, documentales e iconográficas, sobre la identidad y actividad profesional de los ministriles-flautistas castellanos y flamencos que confluyeron en la corte de Castilla. Al mismo tiempo, sugiere algunas respuestas a las preguntas sobre terminología y tipología de los miembros de la familia de las flautas, los músicos intérpretes y posibles contextos en los que se usaron, con anterioridad al reinado de los Reyes Católicos.
