Purpose of the Study. It was the purpose of this study to provide for today's singer and guitarist a modern edition of twelve songs that come from the large collection, the Orphenica Lyra. These twelve songs are Fuenllana's vihuela transcriptions of Juan Vasquez's four-part vocal villancicos. These transcriptions remain true to the original tablature and at the same time adapt to the modern guitar . A brief biographical background of Vasquez and Fuenllana is included, as well as a brief theoretical analysis of each piece. Performance guides for the singer have been derived from various musicological resources not readily available to those who are not researchers themselves.
Procedure. The procedures used in completing this project included the procurement of a microfilm copy of the original tablature and the transcribing of it into modern notation. The actual transcriptions available for performance are contained in the appendix to the dissertation. Bibliographic information was gathered from several primary sources. All pertinent source material was obtained through interlibrary loan or was purchased by the writer. Performance practice analyses were based upon performance experience by the writer, including rehearsals and pre-rehearsal study.
