p. 13: Interesting evidence regarding the vihuela books coming to Latin America, is found through indirect sources. One source is provided by letters written by high administrative officers, asking their superiors in Spain for music books and instruments that might persuade the soldiers and the New World immigrants not to waste their free time in evil activities—such as hunting natives for sport(!) Other valuable evidence comes from song lyrics, such as the anonymous Colombian villancico in black slave dia- lect ‘Vengan que lo plegona la Negla’, which mentions by name Alonso Mudarra. But the most interesting evidence comes from inventories of books that were shipped to the ‘Indias’, which include those as El parnasso by Esteban Daza and Orfénica Lira by Miguel Fuenllana.
The article presents several illustrations of vihuelas from Latin America.
