Summary

Argues that the 4th course on renaissance guitars had the strings further apart to allow players to select between the bourdon and the octave string and thus to play re-entrant when desired.
Does not allow for counter-arguments such as increased spacing due to string thickness. The article is not thoroughly convincing. It does make clear, however, that four-course guitars were played sometimes with re-entrant tuning (4th course at the higher octave) as well as with bourdons.
