Has a table showing all the works by Josquin that survive in Spanish sources of polyphony, together with the source details.
“Absolve” and “Obsecro me” are attributed to Josquin in Spanish instrumental books. “Absolve” is attributed to Josquin in ToledoBC21. Elders sees no reason to discredit it, despite its dense texture, although casts the idea that Obrecht might also be considered.
Among works in vihuela tablatures he mentions Duo “Fecit potentiam” attributed to Josquin by Fuenllana. Picker includes this in NJE as part of a lost Josquin Magnificat Quarti toni. (NJE *20.4, discussed in NJE 20, p. 41)
Elders derives from Valderrábano’s notation the supposed cantus firmus of “Obsecro te”. He observes the disjunction in the cantus firmus between the words “orphanarum” and “filius” and suggests that these have been put together from different works. He points to the similarity between Valderrábano’s text and the on in the Book of Hours of Mary of Burgundy.
Elders concludes on stylistic grounds that there is no stylistic or other consequential evidence to dispute Josquin’s authorship. The work is published as an “opus dubium” in vol. 24 of NJE, no 24.8 in a hypothetical reconstruction by Willem Mook.
