A study and modern edition of E-Bc MS M.454, one of the most important Iberian MSS of early 16th-c. polyphony. The MS includes sacred and secular vocal music by the most eminent Spanish and Franco-Flemish composers of the time; about one hundred of these works are included in the edition. Discussion concerns the date and place of origin of MS M.454; an inventory of the MS; stemmatic relationships with other Continental MSS; the reliability of the MS; and a comparison of readings of pieces shared with E-Boc MS 5; E-Bc MS M.681; E-Mp MS 1335 (the Cancionero musical de palacio); E-SE MS s.s; E-Sco MS 5.v.20; and E-TZ, MSS 2-3. Circumstantial evidence connects MS M.454 with the Cardona family, who occupied the highest ecclesiastical and military positions in Aragón and may have been important music patrons in Barcelona.
