ABSTRACT: The chalk drawings at Rynkeby, Denmark, are a unique source of music iconography. Here for the first time 31 instruments in use around 1560 are precisely dated and examined by musicological standards. Particularly important for the history of individual instruments are the langeleik (Danish zither), the nyckelharpa (Swedish hurdy-gurdy), the vihuela, and the horn. The drawings are evidence of the spread in the north, spurred by the Danish Reformation, of the writings of Sebastian Virdung and Martin Agricola. (Author).
