Summary

[Unedited] Icononographical representations of the vihuela and the two previously identified vihuelas have not been very useful for historical reproductions. The Chambure vihuela has only recently become available to scholars and instrument makers, who have been able to use it as a prototype for constructing historical viheulas. One of its most striking features is its unique ribbed or fluted back. A geometrical analysis of the Chambure vihuela reveals an important link with the 16th-c. guitar made by Belchior Dias. The size and shape of the Chambure make it suitable for performing the solo vihuela repertoire. Iconography has revealed more about larger instruments that are unsuitable for this repertoire.
