Summary

Humanism's influence manifests itself in music in the desire to recapture the musical ideals of ancient Greece. Musical familiarity and practice was essential to the upbringing of educated and cultivated men of this period. In this realm, the vihuela was very popular and enjoyed great prestige in aristocratic circles. Printed vihuela songbooks are among the best representatives of Spanish instrumental music and musical humanism in the 16th c. (RILM NO.: 93-02367-ap)
