Summary

ISSN: 0361-0160. Abstract: The fundamental problem of the soneto is the setting of poems that are not sonnets but are still called sonetos. The second problem is the relative scarcity of sonnets and sonetos in the vihuela (Spanish lute) books published during the 16th century. An analysis of those seven vihuela tablature books published in Spain as well as a consideration of the milieu of their composers eliminates some of the difficulty. Gradually, Spanish texts displaced Italian texts. The vihuela books allowed musical amateurs to perform both traditional and Italianate poetry. The soneto, investigated in an interdisciplinary manner, is significant for the history of poetry in music in the Spanish Renaissance.
