Manuel Morais added (29 December 2007) in an email to vihue-lista:
Perhaps the international guitar community is not aware that in the Madeira Archipelago (as in the Canary Islands) an instrument called RAJÃO is still played today (at the end of the 19th century it was also called "Machete", "Machete-Rajão" or "Braguinha") that has five single strings, but uses a reentrant tuning like Renaissance guitars (from the treble to the bass): la3, mi3, do3, sol3, ré3. It was also the Madeirans who took this instrument to Hawaii at the end of the 19th century and called it "Ukulele" or (in English) "Jumping Flea" or "Taro-patch Guitar".
