One Ortiz in 1514 opened the first music school in the Americas and later another vihuela school in Mexico City. Both vihuela and bandola were originally five-course instruments; the bandola became three-course developing into an instrument similar to the Cuban tres. Composer Lucas Perez de Alaix arrived in 1680. Later influences on music in Cuba were the guitarists Jose Prudencio Mungol (b. 1837) and Francisco Tarrega. Cuban-born guitarists who contributed to the musical development in Cuba were Severino Lopez (1900-1978) and Clara Romero de Nicola (b. 1886). Romero founded the guitar department at the Conservatorio Municipal of Havana in 1934. More recent interest in the classical guitar has been furthered by the composer Augustin Barrios.
