The early repertory appears substantially improvised, progressively absorbing learned imitative counterpoint polyphony. Further discussion centres on the instrument’s uses, the aesthetic goals of players, and specific information on various aspects of performance including instrumental technique, improvisation and embellishment, intabulation, song accompaniment, tuning and temperament.
