During the 15th and 16th c., a significant number of Masses, motets, and songs were transcribed for two lutes. Two compilations in Germany were well known: Hans Jacob Wecker’s Lautenbuch vonn mancherley sch©œnen und lieblichen Stucken and Wolff Heckel’s Lautten Buch, von mancherley sch©œnen und lieblichen Stucken. With the work of composers such as Francesco Spinacino and Giovanni Antonio Terzi, the sense of dialogue between the instruments increased and transcriptions started acquiring a concerto-like quality. These transcriptions also enjoyed a certain vogue in the Netherlands and gradually acquired elements of the madrigal.
