Examines the prefaces of three treatises by vihuelists with attention to the following areas: the importance of the instrument in relation to the voice, aspects of the writing of tablature based on a vocal model, and the importance of song in musical apprenticeship. The treatises are Tomás de Santa María's «Libro llamado arte de tañer fantasia» (Valladolid, 1565), Juan Bermudo's «Declaración de instrumentos musicales» (Ossuna,1555), and Pietro Cerone's «El melopeo y maestro» (Naples, 1613).
