Summary

An analysis of the first known book for vihuela, «El maestro» by Luis de Milán, paying special attention to Milán's directions to shift fret IV and what sort of temperament he used. The word «terminos» as used by Milán can be interpreted to mean "assumed tuning"; fret IV can occupy a flat or sharp position according to the function it must fulfill; the hypothesis that the function of the fret is determined by a piece's mode is refuted, though certain relationships between mode and fret function are identifiable, e.g., the fifth and sixth modes generally require fret IV to be flat; the equivocal use of fret IV implies that Milán used a temperament intermediate between equal and meantone; Milán most likely did not follow theoretical systems, but depended on his ear to adjust the fret.
