The Mexican song «Cielito lindo» in its earliest form was an 18th-c. Spanish play by Francisco de Castro called «El pésame de Medrano» (1702). Two related versions of the song are found in Veracruz Province. Guitar-type instruments used in the area were the jarana huasteca and guitara quinta. (Hartsock, Ralph)
