The documentary basis of the study is an unpublished catalogue of 315 pictures with musical iconography. This catalogue is the result of the systematic compilation of Catalan, Aragonese, Valencian, and Majorcan altarpieces from the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Renaissance. Cataloguing follows the system proposed by the Research Center for Music Iconography (RCMI)/Repertoire International d'Iconographie Musicale (RIdIM). The study deals with the structure, general features, shapes, and playing position of the harp, lute, gittern, rebec, psaltery, hurdy-gurdy, fiddle, viol, and 'vihuela', as well as the number of strings and their tuning. The organological point of view is complemented with an iconographic and symbolic analysis of the pictorial subjects catalogued.

ABSTRACT (RILM): A catalogue of 315 Catalan, Aragonese, Valencian, and Majorcan altarpieces produced between the end of the Middle Ages and early Renaissance, which include depictions of the harp, lute, gittern, rebec, psaltery, hurdy-gurdy, fiddle, viol, and vihuela. General features are investigated as well as shapes of instruments, their playing positions, number of strings and tunings, and symbolism. (Blazekovic, Zdravko)
