Summary

Abstract: Diego Pisador's Libro de música para vihuela (Salamanca, 1552) contains fourteen texted villancico intabulations, six of which are unica. The remaining villancicos also appear in the Cancionero de Uppsala (Venice, 1556), the Recopilación de Sonetos y Villancicos a cuatro y cinco voces by Juan Vázquez, (Seville, 1560), and the vihuela books by Luis de Narváez (1538), Alonso Mudarra (1546), Enríquez de Valderrábano (1547), and Miguel de Fuenllana (1554). Pisador's villancico intabulations are significant because they do not reflect his portrayal as an untalented amateur, but rather as a bearer of a lively tradition of textual and musical manipulation in the mid- sixteenth century.
